[fanservice]

Sure, a lot of anime fanservice is tasteless and exploitative, but "tasteful nudes" and "erotica" aren't that much better a lot of the time. A lot of it comes from that same coomer mentality, but is made with the pretense of being more "classy" and "refined." Some of it comes from genuine awe for the human form, but a lot of it is just made to give rich guys a boner without feeling like a degenerate for watching japanese cartoons. At least fanservice is honest about it. The artist clearly wanted to draw some horny art, so they did. But fine artists have to come up with some bs in their artist's statement about how they're totally not perverts, this stuff is important. Honestly I don't care which you prefer, just don't act superior over your preference of sexy art

i don't really view nudity as inherently sexual, nor do i find women attractive for the most part, so my interest in classical art comes purely from the appreciation of the craftsmanship. i don't doubt that sex appeal was a factor in creating them, but i think they still hold value even if they don't get you horny. my dislike for anime fanservice in particular comes from the fact that i think it really sours the atmosphere and emotional impact of some of the scenes. i don't watch stuff where i know sexy magical schoolgirls are the main attraction, but fanservice plagues even more serious works, and i can't help but get a bad taste in my mouth when they waste time on closeup ass shots instead of developing the narrative or character relationships.
